Escalating OPP Costs Threaten Municipal Affordability

BANCROFT, ON, September 23, 2026

The Town of Bancroft is demanding provincial action as escalating OPP costs place increasing pressure on local taxpayers and essential municipal services.

Policing costs could reach approximately $1.79 million in 2027, consuming nearly 24 per cent of Bancroft’s municipal levy. The projected increase alone is equivalent to an estimated 2.37 per cent municipal tax increase, before any other operating or infrastructure pressures are considered.

“Small municipalities cannot continue absorbing increases over which they have no control,” said Mayor Paul Jenkins. “The Province must act before these costs further undermine affordability and our ability to deliver essential services.”

Council is requesting increased provincial support and a fairer OPP funding model that reflects Bancroft’s limited tax base and regional role.

The Town’s full letter is attached and outlines the financial impact and requested provincial actions in greater detail. This letter will be sent to the Solicitor General, with copies to the Premier of Ontario, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Minister of Finance, AMO, ROMA, neighbouring municipalities and the local Police Services Board.
